In 2006 local Lennox Head pharmacist, Rob Blackburn, approached AFO on behalf of 48 pharmacies between Grafton and Tweed Heads with the goal of supporting an overseas aid project.
AFO had been contacted by Mbagathi Farm School, located on the edge of Nairobi National Park, with the hope of gaining funding for a building for boarding students. This new accommodation would allow them to increase the number of places they currently provided for orphaned and disadvantaged students as their current infrastructure was no longer big enough.
In July 2007 this building, thanks to the generosity of this pharmacist group, has been successfully completed. Twenty eight girls (with space for up to forty) now have a safe, comfortable, supported environment in which to live and allow them to attend school.
Janelle Gibson, one of AFO's committee members, has recently returned from 6months in Kenya and has bought back many photos and thankyou cards from the children to express their gratitude and delight in their new home. "The boarding children are supported by wonderful, African boarding mothers. They now have fresh, spacious new rooms to live in and a bright big common room to play, do crafts and complete their homework. The potential of these children, now that they have received this support, is amazing."
