Sue & Steve first met Virage in 2003 on a visit to a small village close to Matara , Sri Lanka with a local aid worker. This was very distressing for them; 10 year old Virage has muscular dystrophy and had been living in appalling conditions for all of his life. He and his family were living in a timber and coconut leaf shack and slept on a hardened, mud floor. He was unable to fend for himself and his mother and father worked hard to provide for him as best they could. Due to their lack of education and money they were unable to get him any medical help and as such he was left to lie in the hut 24 hours a day unable to move. Sanitary conditions were poor and living conditions were almost unbearable.
“We were able to build them a small house and give Virage a bed to live on rather than the hard floor he was used to.” They did their best to get medical care for him but this was just a small contribution to the long-term prospects for Virage and children like him. Since the tsunami Sue & Steve have lost contact with Virage and his family.
We now have employed an aid worker to keep in touch with Virage so we can be kept up to date with his progress.
